With flood warnings popping up across Oakland and Macomb Counties, it’s a good time to double-check your home’s plumbing defenses. Heavy rain and overwhelmed sewer systems can lead to big messes—fast. Whether your basement’s finished or just home to your holiday decorations and water heater, here are some simple steps you can take to keep things dry and damage-free.
✅ TEST YOUR SUMP PUMP & BACKUP SYSTEM
Pour a bucket of water into your sump pit—your pump should kick on and drain it. If nothing happens or it sounds like it’s struggling, it’s time to give us a call. Got a battery backup? Check

the battery life and test that system too. No backup? It might be time to consider one—especially with the storms we’ve been seeing lately.
🚫 CHECK YOUR SEWER BACKUP PREVENTION
Installing a sewer check valve on your main line can stop sewage from backing up into your home when the city’s system is overloaded. If you’ve had backup issues in the past, this can be a game changer. We install these all the time in Metro Detroit—reach out if you’re not sure what you’ve got.
🌧 CLEAR GUTTERS & DOWNSPOUTS
This one isn’t technically plumbing, but it matters: make sure your gutters are clear and your downspouts are pushing water away from your home, not pooling it at your foundation. Every little bit helps reduce the load on your sump pump.
🕳 INSPECT FLOOR DRAINS
Basement floor drains are your last line of defense. Make sure they’re uncovered and draining freely. If water pools around them or drains slowly, we can snake the line before a backup becomes a flood.
🔧 LOCATE YOUR MAIN WATER SHUT-OFF VALVE
If disaster does strike, you’ll want to shut off your home’s water fast. Take a minute to locate your main shut-off valve now—your future self (and your basement) will thank you.
🔍 SEAL FOUNDATION CRACKS
Water loves a path of least resistance. Hairline cracks around your foundation or where pipes enter your home can become leak points. Use waterproof sealant or call a pro if you notice anything suspicious.
📦 MOVE VALUABLES OFF THE FLOOR
If your basement floods, anything sitting on the floor is at risk. Raise boxes, furniture, or equipment off the ground—or move them to higher ground entirely until storm season passes.
📱 INSTALL A WATER ALARM
Smart water sensors and leak detectors can alert you at the firs
t sign of trouble, even if you’re not home. Early warning = faster action = less damage.
